During the Cold War, American experts would scrutinize every shred of evidence – including who stood where on Lenin’s tomb during military parades – for clues about Kremlin leadership struggles and their implications for our security.
A similar phenomenon is underway at the moment regarding China’s secretive Communist hierarchy. Purges of senior military officers believed to be loyal to the current Chinese “emperor,” Xi Jinping, his recent, protracted absences – both physical and from the state-controlled media, and rumors of his ill-health are feeding speculation he may soon be toppled from power.
A timely webinar today looks at whether Xi’s days as absolute dictator are indeed numbered. And, either way, whether the advanced state of his preparations for a shooting war means that we are at a moment of acute danger – and what’s our appropriate response.
